At over 11,500 acres, Makoshika State Park is the largest state park in Montana. the name Makoshika is referred to as a variant spelling from a Lakota phrase meaning bad lands, bad spirits or perhaps bad earth. Regardless of the translation, the formations created by eroded sedimentary rock and clay soils are impressive. Some significant dinosaur fossils have been discovered in the area.
